Osaka at a glance

Osaka is located on the main island of Honshu, roughly in the center of Japan. Osaka City, which was incorporated in 1889, has a population of 2.5 million and an area of 221 square kilometers. Although Osaka is Japan's second smallest prefecture by size, its population represents 7% of the entire nation, making it the second most populous prefecture after Tokyo.

Osaka Castle, with a five-layer donjon as its core, is on a lawn park that stretches for about 60,000 square meters. During the cherry blossom season in the spring, this park is especially crowded with "hanami," or cherry blossom viewing, crowd. Osaka's north gate, Umeda, has a gigantic stretch of an underground mall that houses many restaurants, and fashion and sundry goods stores.
